Frequently Asked Questions

To log a meal, tap the + button on the home screen or navigate to the Meals tab and tap Log a Meal. You can search for a food item by name, scan a barcode using your camera, or enter custom nutrition values manually. Once you've added all items in your meal, tap Save. Your XP and calorie totals will update immediately. You can log meals throughout the day — breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks are all tracked separately.
Every healthy action you take earns you XP (experience points). Logging meals, hitting your calorie goal, staying within your macros, maintaining your streak, and completing daily challenges all reward XP. As you accumulate XP, you level up and advance through ranks — starting at Initiate and progressing through ranks like Warrior, Champion, and beyond. Each rank unlocks new profile badges, challenges, and cosmetic rewards. Your current rank and XP progress are always visible on your profile screen.
The Purity Score is a daily quality metric that reflects how clean and balanced your eating was on a given day. It's calculated based on factors like your macro balance, how close you stayed to your calorie goal, the ratio of whole foods to processed items in your log, sugar and sodium intake, and whether you hit key micronutrient targets. A score of 100 represents a perfect day by your profile's standards. The Purity Score is tracked over time so you can spot trends and improve week over week — think of it as your daily nutrition grade.
During onboarding, HealthBar collects your age, biological sex, height, weight, and activity level, then uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation to calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). This is multiplied by your activity factor to estimate your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE). From there, your calorie goal is adjusted based on your stated objective — whether that's losing weight, maintaining, or building muscle. If you feel your goal needs adjusting, you can update your health profile at any time through the Profile → Settings → Update Health Profile flow.
Yes. To edit a logged meal, go to the Meals tab and tap on the meal entry you want to change. From there you can adjust portion sizes, swap out individual food items, or add new items to the meal. To delete a meal entirely, swipe left on the meal entry and tap Delete, or open the meal and tap the trash icon in the top-right corner. Note that editing or deleting a meal will recalculate your daily totals, Purity Score, and any XP awarded for that day.
A streak requires at least one meal to be logged before midnight in your local timezone. If you miss a full day without logging anything, your streak will reset to zero the following morning. However, HealthBar offers one Streak Shield per week — a grace item that automatically activates the first time you miss a day, preserving your streak. You can earn additional Streak Shields by completing weekly challenges or reaching milestone levels. You'll always receive a push notification in the evening if you haven't logged anything yet that day.
You can update your health profile at any time by going to Profile → Settings → Health Profile. From there you can edit your weight, height, age, activity level, and goal. Changes take effect immediately and will recalculate your daily calorie and macro targets. If your stats have changed significantly — such as after substantial weight loss or a change in training volume — it's a good idea to refresh your profile so your goals stay accurate and meaningful.
Yes, core functionality works offline. You can log meals, view your history, and track your progress without an internet connection. Any data entered while offline is stored locally on your device and automatically synced to the cloud the next time you come online. Barcode scanning and food database searches require a connection, but previously searched or frequently used foods are cached locally for offline access. Push notifications and leaderboard features require connectivity to function.
Your privacy is a top priority. All data transmitted between the app and our servers is encrypted using TLS. Your personal health data — including weight, meals, and profile details — is never sold to third parties and is not used for advertising. You can export or permanently delete your account data at any time from Settings → Account → Manage Data. HealthBar is fully compliant with Apple's App Store privacy guidelines and applicable data protection regulations. For full details, please review our Privacy Policy linked in the app.

Privacy Policy

Last updated: April 3, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how HealthBar ("we", "our", or "us") collects, uses, and protects your information when you use the HealthBar iOS application. By using HealthBar, you agree to the practices described below.

1. Information We Collect

We collect only the information necessary to provide the app's features:

  • Account information: Your email address, collected at sign-up via Firebase Authentication. We do not collect your name unless you choose to add it to your profile.
  • Food logs: Meals, food items, portion sizes, and timestamps you log within the app.
  • Health profile data: Age, biological sex, height, weight, activity level, and health goal that you provide during onboarding or when updating your profile. This data is used solely to calculate your personalised nutrition targets.
  • Device information: Basic device identifiers, iOS version, and crash/diagnostic data collected automatically to help us fix bugs and improve performance. This data is anonymised and cannot be used to identify you personally.

2. How We Use Your Information

  • To provide and operate the HealthBar app, including tracking meals, streaks, XP, and ranking progress.
  • To calculate your daily calorie and macro targets based on your health profile using established nutritional formulas.
  • To sync your data across multiple devices when you are signed in to your account.
  • To generate personalised AI-powered health goal suggestions using your anonymised nutrition data.
  • To send you optional push notifications (e.g. streak reminders), which you can disable at any time in iOS Settings.
  • To diagnose crashes and improve app reliability using anonymised diagnostic reports.

We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to any third party.

3. Third-Party Services

HealthBar relies on a small number of trusted third-party services to function:

  • Firebase (Google LLC): Used for user authentication and cloud data storage. Your account data and logs are stored in Firebase Firestore under Google's infrastructure. Google's privacy policy applies to data processed by Firebase. See firebase.google.com/support/privacy.
  • Anthropic Claude API: Used to generate personalised AI health goal suggestions. Only anonymised nutritional summary data (e.g. average calorie intake, macro ratios) is sent — no personally identifiable information such as your email or name is ever transmitted to Anthropic. See anthropic.com/privacy.
  • Open Food Facts: An open-source food database used to look up nutritional information when you scan a barcode or search for a food item. Queries are made anonymously and contain no personal data. See openfoodfacts.org/privacy.

4. Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored in Google Firebase, hosted on Google Cloud infrastructure with industry-standard physical and logical security controls. All data transmitted between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit using TLS (Transport Layer Security). Data at rest in Firebase Firestore is encrypted by Google by default. While no system is completely immune to security risks, we take reasonable and appropriate measures to protect your information against unauthorised access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction.

5. Data Retention and Deletion

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. You can permanently delete your account and all associated data at any time by going to Settings → Account → Delete Account within the app. Upon deletion, your email address, health profile, meal logs, and all other personal data are permanently removed from our systems within 30 days. Anonymised, aggregated statistics derived from your data (which cannot be used to identify you) may be retained for product improvement purposes.

6. Children's Privacy

HealthBar is intended for users aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account or provided us with personal data, please contact us at support@healthbar.app and we will promptly delete the information.

7. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, for material changes, notify you via an in-app notice or email. Continued use of HealthBar after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
